Advanced Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer: Focusing on the Therapeutic Horizon in 2004 (7/27/04)

  • Summary: Although epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibition has not yet shown a benefit in the front-line setting in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a critical, pace-setting phase 3 trial presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2004 meeting has rejuvenated our enthusiasm.

C. Gridelli, et al, "Treatment of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer patients with ECOG performance status 2: results of an European Experts Panel" Annals of Oncology 12:419-426, 2004 (Posted 7/27/04)

  • Summary: On the basis of current evidence, chemotherapy treatment appears justified for patients with advanced NSCLC and PS2. Single-agent chemotherapy (gemcitabine, vinorelbine, taxanes) could be the preferred option, although carboplatin-based or low-dose cisplatin-based doublets may represent alternative options.

Handra P. Belani, et al, "First-line chemotherapy for NSCLS: an overview of relevant trials" Lung Cancer 38 (2002) S13-S19 (Posted 7/27/04)

  • Summary: This paper reviews data on efficacy and toxicity drawn from teh wide range of trials that have investigated alternative monotherapies and two- and three-drug regimens. It also includes detailed presentation of results from TAX 326, the only trial to date that demonstrates a significant advantage for one new agent/platinum combination over another.
