Nutrition And The Cancer Survivor

You survived cancer. Now, what? A pamphlet can't answer that one completely -- you'll have to fill in those blanks -- but it can guide you in your daily scavenge when that primal urge takes over and suddenly, you have to eat.

Nutrition and the Cancer Survivor, a concise, accessible publication by the American Institute for Cancer Research, dishes out a few simple rules for health from the AICR and provides some guidelines for eating to prevent a recurrence of cancer, if not merely to eat healthily.

The pamphlet also advises a general audience on topics ranging from exercise to use of tobacco and alcohol to handling and cooking of the actual food in your new diet.

Some Simple Guidelines (from Nutrition and the Cancer Survivor)

  1. Choose a diet rich in a variety of plant-based foods.
  2. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit.
  3. Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active.
  4. Drink alcohol only in moderation, if at all.
  5. Select foods low in fat and salt.
  6. Prepare and store food safely.
  7. Do not use tobacco in any form.

The pamphlet goes on to offer further information helpful in determining what studies and publications are reliable, how to assess what your own nutritional needs are, who to contact to learn more detailed information relevant to you, and evaluating what foods can help you maximize the nutritional potential of every meal of your new cancer-free life
