Peritoneal Mesothelioma
This disease is sometimes referred to as diffuse peritoneal mesothelioma, and this is where the cancer has spread out.
The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include: abdominal pains and weakness; weight loss; nausea; loss off appetite; abdominal swelling; bowel obstruction. Depending on the location of the tumor, additional problems can be experienced such as breathing problems and severe pains.
Treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma can also vary, and is dependant upon a number of factors. The doctor, once a diagnosis has been made, will make a recommendation based upon details such as: the extent of the cancer and how advanced it is; the patient's general condition and health; past medical history of the patient; and the patient's age.

Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) provide a promising combined treatment strategy for selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis that can improve patient survival and quality of life. (1/8/09)
Peritoneal tumor dissemination arising from colorectal cancer, appendiceal cancer, gastric cancer, gynecologic malignancies or peritoneal mesothelioma is a common sign of advanced tumor stage or disease recurrence and mostly associated with poor prognosis. More...
Intraperitoneal Hyperthermic Chemotherapy (IPHC) for Peritoneal Carcinomatosis and Malignant Ascites. Creighton University Medical Center (CUMU) Cancer Center (9/29/04)
A major difficulty in treating patients with cancer tht has seeded widely on lining surfaces in the stomach cavity (abdomen, peritoneal cavity) is that it is often not possibly to remove all the cancer cells. As a result the cancer often persists despite surgical and other treatments. More...
Treatment and Prevention of Malignant Ascites Associated with Disseminated Intraperitoneal Malignancies by Aggressive Combined-Modality Therapy (9/29/04)
No satisfactory treatment exists to treat or prevent malignant ascites secondary to nonovarian intraperitoneal (IP) disseminated malignancies. A Phast I/II clinical trial combining radical cytoreductive surgery and IP hyperthermic chemotherapy with mitomycin is presented. More...
Management of Peritoneal-Surface Malignancy: The Surgeon's Role (2/22/00)
Conclusions: The surgeon must accept responsibility for knowledgeable management of peritoneal surface dissemination of cancer. A curative approach has been demonstrated in large phase-II studies. Adjuvant studies with perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy in diseases where peritoneal surface spread occurs are indicated. More...
