Study of SS1(dsFv)-PE38 Immunotoxin in Patients With Advanced Malignancies That Express Mesothelin

What's the place of immunotherapy in malignant mesothelioma treatments? (3/3/10)

Mesothelioma immunotherapy is undoubtedly a highly promising but also very challenging approach to the treatment of this disease that has slipped through the defense lines of the immune system. This article reviews past and recent developments of the clinical strategies that concern immunotherapy of mesothelioma. More...

Summary and Abstracts of SS1 (re-posted 1/10/2005)

Immunotixins can locate tumor cells and kill them without harming normal cells. Immunotoxin therapy may be an effective treatment for advanced cancer. Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of immunotoxins in treating patients who have advanced cancer. More...

Cytotoxic Activity of the Recombinant Anti-mesothelin I immunotoxin, SS1(dsFv)PE38, Towards Tumor Cell Lines Established from Ascites of Patients with Peritoneal Mesotheliomas (7/29/2004)

Mesothelin, a cell surface glycoprotein, is an attractive candidate for targeted therapy given its overexpression, as detected by immunohistochemistry, in mesotheliomas. The goal of this study was to evaluate mesothelin expression in fresh tumor cells obtained from ascites of patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, as well as to determine the sensitivity of these cells to an immunotoxin targeting mesothelin. Consent To Participate - SS1 (dsFv)-PE38 Anti-Mesothelin Immunotoxin (re-posted 4/30/2002)

Mesothelin is a protein normally produced by cells lining body cavities which has been found also on cells in several types of cancer. SS1 binds very tightly to mesothelin. Pseudomonas exotoxin (PE) is a protein made by bacteria which can kill human cells if it gets inside. The experimental agent SS1 (dsFv)-PE38 is composed of a stable form of SS1 and a portion of the PE. It is hoped that the SS1 will attach to the cancer cells and permit entry of the PE, killing the cells. More...
