The UCLA Meso Research Program is sponsoring the 1st International Symposium on Lung-Sparing Therapies for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma on May 21st at the Sheraton Delfina Hotel in Santa Monica. The Law Office of Roger Worthington is pleased to co-sponsor this first-ever medical seminar that focuses on the treatment options for patients with pleural mesothelioma.
The course will be led by Dr. Robert B. Cameron Director of the Mesothelioma Research Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the West Los Angeles Veterans’ Administration Medical Center and a long-time advocate for lung-sparing surgery.
The seminar's distinguished international faculty includes both Mr. Tom Treasure, MD and Mr. David A. Waller, MD from England who will discuss the results announced from the Mesothelioma and Radical Surgery (MARS) Trail conducted in the UK. Expert speakers will also address the role of radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, ablation, and possible future therapy strategies. Speakers will also address pain management and the model of treating meso as a chronic disease with maintenance therapy.
"We are pleased as punch to support this seminar,” said Roger Worthington. “I remember when I first began representing meso patients in the late 1980s that the only hope for a 'cure' was the radical pneumonectomy. Back then, the pleurectomy-decortication surgery was denigrated as ‘palliative” only. Today, the clinical data support what Dr. Cameron has long advocated that the P-D is a rational, effective and humane way of treating meso patients.”
The seminar is designed primarily for physicians needing continuing medical education (CME) credit, but mesothelioma patients, their families, students, physicians in training and other interested parties may attend for a low fee.
We are especially pleased that the program will include one mesothelioma survivor, Terrence Latham, who will talk about his goals and concerns as a patient, and Geraldine Lepore, whose husband recently passed away. Mrs. Lepore will talk about living with mesothelioma from the family’s perspective.
