Oppose Senate Bill 1125 St. Augustine, FL

June 14, 2003

Dear Senator Bob Graham,

I am writing in regards to the new bill introduced in the United States Senate, by Senator Orrin Hatch (R., Utah). The "Asbestos Injury Resolution Act."

As a registered voter in the state of Florida, I am against the bill. I am sickened and appalled at even the thought of yet another "corporate bailout", at the expense of sick and dying people and their families. I am one of those family members who stood helplessly by and watched my strong and viable father's body ravaged by this horribly painful disease called "Mesothelioma", contracted on a Naval ship by asbestos exposure.

This disease not only took the life of a good man, who defended his country proudly, it took a small piece of the hearts of every person who knew him.

Albert Lee Adams had just turned 60 when this malicious disease finally exhausted his last breath. His pain was unbearable.

As I watched this, I thought back on my own life as a 21 year old hospital employee, sitting at my desk as men, covered from their heads to their toes in "space suits", pulling poisonous asbestos from the wall and ceilings while myself and many others sat quietly doing our jobs. Will I someday have the fate of my father and die a horribly painful, premature death because of the negligence of asbestos companies and others involved in the clean up of this poison? I guess time will tell. In the meantime, I WILL NOT stop telling anyone who will listen about this proposed law and the people who back it.

I am just one of many hard working voters who ask nothing from our government, but fairness and honesty from the people we elect.

Tammy Adams Clifford
