Leading Medical and Scientific Experts Join Forces to Clarify Misinformation about the Real Dangers of Chrysotile Asbestos
The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) and The Environmental Information Association (EIA) have recently announced the development of the Chrysotile Asbestos Fact Sheet. ADAO and EIA have concluded, along with the majority of reputable scientific agencies, that there is sufficient evidence to support the conclusion that all forms of asbestos, including chrysotile, are carcinogenic and are responsible for asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma, laryngeal and ovarian cancers.
The Chrysotile Asbestos Fact Sheet provides clear and concise information on the dangers of chrysotile compiled by medical experts and scientists with over 300 years of collective experience and hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific publications to their credit. The Chrysotile Asbestos Fact Sheet will be presented to the United States Congress as a scientifically developed paper in support of the continued efforts to ban asbestos.
According to the Chrysotile Asbestos Fact Sheet:
- Chrysotile is the most common variety of asbestos found in products in the United States and the most abundant asbestos variety on earth.
- Chrysotile asbestos has been a significant contributor to asbestos-related illness and death to the US and worldwide workforce.
- There is sufficient evidence to conclude that ALL FORMS of asbestos, including chrysotile, are carcinogenic and are responsible for asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma, laryngeal and ovarian cancers.
- Special interest groups ranging from chrysotile asbestos producer nations to major industry sectors are lobbying to have the exposure risk to chrysotile asbestos devalued compared to other asbestos varieties (amphiboles). This has to do with commerce, not defensible science. The USEPA, OSHA, World Health Organization (WHO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) say there is “no known safe level of exposure”…to asbestos…of any type.

“The Environmental Information Association is proud to collaborate with the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization to produce the Chrysotile Asbestos Fact Sheet, in an effort to clarify the misinformation released on the very real dangers of asbestos exposure,” said J. Brent Kynoch, Managing Director, Environmental Information Association. “We will continue our endeavor for full acknowledgement by the asbestos industry, and widespread education of the public, of the risks associated with asbestos.”
“Somberly, we honor and remember victims today on Worker’s Memorial Day who have died from asbestos exposure,” said Linda Reinstein, Executive Director, Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization. “Asbestos exposure is the world’s leading cause of cancer in the workplace and the United States Congress must act now and ban asbestos. Prevention is our only cure for asbestos-caused diseases.”
Environmental Information Association (EIA): The Environmental Information Association is a multidisciplinary association that collects, generates and disseminates information concerning environmental health hazards to occupants of buildings, industrial sites and other facilities. For information contact the National Headquarters at www.eia-usa.org.
Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO): The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization was founded by asbestos victims and their families in 2004. ADAO seeks to give asbestos victims and concerned citizens a united voice to help ensure that their rights are fairly represented and protected, while raising public awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure and often deadly asbestos related diseases. ADAO is an independent volunteer organization. For more information visit www.asbestosdiseaseawareness.org.
